Pele

Prepping some artwork to sell at the art show in Waikiki.

In Hawaiian mythology Pele is the goddess of fire and volcanoes. Ti leaves are sacred to her, and to this day on the island of Hawaii, people tie bundles of ti leaves around the corners of their property to protect them from lava.

The original image is 8″x10″ at 300 dpi (the above image is 96 dpi). Created using Clip Studio Paint Pro on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4. That’s a lot of pro. Hence my desire to become an Artist Pro.

I’ll be making photo prints, putting these in matte frames and plastic baggies all for the sole purpose of trying to sell some art to tourists at the art show on the back wall of the Honolulu Zoo in Waikiki. Same with my Hoku ‘Aumakua and my Taming the Surf Dragon prints. Also, as with the first one, I’m open to suggestions for a title for this print. Just “Pele” sounds pretty stale, also Pele is pretty important to the Hawaiian culture and there has been a lot of art and imagery based around her so I’d like to call it something more comic-ey. How about Ultimate Pele?

Oh, and here’s my process pics:

Chalk layer.

Ink Layer

Color Swipes layer

Auto-Color using the ink layer as a reference layer, then duplicate the layer, adjust the Hue, Luminosity, and Saturation down on the top layer then selectively erase with the air brush tool sections of it that I wanted to maintain the brightness of, and hide the ink layer.

Then just render the whole mess with oil paint brushes and smooth watercolor.

Here’s the process gif just for fun.
