‘Aumakua Manō

Print 4 of 5. Saturday I should have all my prints matted and sealed in plastic and ready to go sell at the Waikiki Art Show.

Sticking to my ‘Aumakua theme that I began with my Turtle Warrior. Manō is the Hawaiian word for shark and ‘Aumakua is a guardian spirit. So here is my modern day parkour-style superhero with his shark spirit guardian. I hopefully will get around to a full set of ‘aumakua prints (including gekko, crow, owl, rat, dog, octopus). After I finished the turtle warrior I had an idea for a “dark-future-Hawaiian-setting-‘aumakuas-return-to-battle-against-mega-corporations-to protect-the-islands” comic. That’s why even though this guy is wearing an ancient Hawaiian helmet and wielding a couple of not-quite-real-maybe-they-are-psionic-blades antique, shark-tooth swords, it is obvious (hopefully) that he is in a modern setting (with his combat pants and boots). Maybe I’ll do a full series of mock-up ‘aumakua comic covers to see if there’s any interest for a Kickstarter.

Anyway, speculating. This print may be too dark–both in luminosity and in 90’s comic anti-hero style–for any tourist to buy in Waikiki. But hey, comic nerds go on vacation, too.

Painting was done with Clip Studio Paint Pro on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4. Full-resolution print is 8″x10″ at 300 dpi, (the above preview image is 96 dpi). Here, have a gif.
